Dato’ Sri Ismail Sabri- Straight to The Point: Malaysia wants U.S. Investments.

1. The visit of Malaysian Prime Minister Dato’ Sri Ismail Sabri (DSIS) to the White House today was the main event which was long time coming. President of the United States Joe Biden hosted in-person the leaders of ASEAN for a two-day ASEAN-US special summit. DSIS led the Malaysian delegation for this work visit with the interests of Malaysians in mind.

2. Yesterday, DSIS led by example by publicly extending his intent to invite Tesla, one of the most popular electric car makers in the world to invest in Malaysia to produce electric cars. Although the American electric vehicle company are already in discussion with Malaysia’s neighbouring country, Indonesia to build a probable factory in the republic, Malaysia’s position as one of the prominent semi-conductor industries presents a strategic preposition to the likes of Tesla to establish their presence here. DSIS was brave to consider mentioning this in public to Ted Osius, president and CEO of US-ASEAN Business Council (US-ABC) which represents 170 American businesses in Southeast Asia.

3. DSIS represented all Malaysians when he spoke in Washington, and he made it clear of the frustrations felt by the region since former President Donald Trump skipped at the very last minute to avoid the 18-nations East Asia Summit and pulls U.S. out of the Trans-Pacific Partnership (TPP) trade deal. Bear in mind, the TPP was positioned since 2015, before it was rescinded in 2017- a deal that was set to become the world’s largest free trade deal, covering 40 percent of the global economy.

4. DSIS did not shy away from explicitly naming what he saw fitting to help Malaysians as well. He spoke in tandem with Biden’s concern, which is to push back against China’s growing influences in the region. DSIS pointed that the Regional Economic Comprehensive Partnership (RCEP), a Chinese-backed initiative has seen ASEAN member states considering further reduction in trade barriers. DSIS is pushing forth the Malaysian agenda to bring in a new standard of regional cooperation through mutual geostrategic, and economic interests. This is important, as DSIS is fighting for what is good for the sake of Malaysians – which could see an unprecedented investment of up to RM 448 million into the region.
